HARGEISA (HOL) - Somaliland government has lifted the ban on Universal TV six months after it ordered its closure.
The break-away region said Saturday the UK based Somali channel was now free to resume operations but did not give further information.
"The ban on Universal TV has now been lifted with effect from January 10 and can now be free to resume operations, "the Ministry of Information said in a statement. The station was shut down last June following what Somaliland authorities said was its failure to air live the president's speech during the Independence Day celebrations.
The decision to lift the ban comes barely three weeks after Astaan TV director Abdimanan Yusuf was released about a month after his sentencing for five years. His channel was shut down mid last year and fined for unspecified reasons.
