MOGADISHU (HOL) - Two Al-Shabaab militants planting land mines on a South West state road were killed Monday by the Somali military.
Qansahdhere district commissioner in the South West State Mukhtar Abdi told journalists the two were spotted following a tip-off from members of the public.
“Our security forces conducted an operation which led to the death of the two militants following a tip-off from the public,” said Abdi. “They were planning to harm the public.”
The district official added that bomb experts safely detonated improvised explosive devices on the scene.
The planned attack comes barely 48 hours after a deadly clash between Somali National Army and Al-Shabaab militants in Lower Shabelle.
The militants launched a twin morning raid in Awdegle and Barire SNA forward operating bases resulting in tens of deaths.
SNA boss General Odowaa Rage said over 80 militants were killed while his side suffered 14 fatalities.
Al-Shabaab has increased attacks targeting civilians and security outposts in recent weeks amid an ongoing standoff between the Federal Government and the Federal Member States over the much-delayed elections.
