MOGADISHU (HOL) - Presidential candidates meeting in Mogadishu have called on the Federal Government and two federal member states to withdraw civil servants and security agents they appointed to their respective electoral committees. In a preliminary statement Sunday evening ahead of the conclusion of a three days meeting today, the 12 opposition candidates said President Mohamed Farmaajo and the presidents of Jubbaland and Puntland should review the appointments and bring in new people.
According to the candidates who include former presidents Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, Jubbaland president Ahmed Madobe and his Puntland counterpart Abdullahi Deni have violated rules of fairness by appointing civil servants to their state electoral committees.
The 12 leaders also reiterated their earlier demand on Farmaajo whom they accuse of packing the Federal Indirect Elections Team (FIET) with intelligence officials and senior civil servants. Among those appointed by Farmaajo is his deputy chief of staff Abdinur Mohamed.
The three days meeting concludes today upon which the leaders will be expected to issue a joint position on the upcoming elections.
