UN welcomes Dhusamareb talks, urges compromise

Tuesday July 21, 2020

MOGADISHU (HOL) - The UN has welcomed the ongoing talks between the Federal Government and Federal Member State leaders in Dhusamareb calling for compromise among the leaders.

“The United Nations in Somalia is very pleased to witness President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and all FMS leaders meeting in Dhusamareb for important discussions on national priorities, especially elections,” a statement from the UN read in part. “In these talks, we urge a spirit of constructive compromise.”

Preliminary talks between President Farmaajo and FMS leaders kicked off in the central Somalia town Monday ahead of the main negotiations scheduled for this week.

The leaders are expected to develop and agree on a roadmap to pave wave for elections this year under a compromise electoral model.

This follows the announcement last month by the elections commission NIEC that universal elections were not viable this year.

The meeting is also seen as crucial for the two levels of government to reset relations after they tumbled and soured since mid 2017 when the two differed over the Gulf Crisis issue.

The FMS stood with the Saudi-led faction while FGS announced a neutral position though it subtly supported Qatar.
