MOGADISHU (HOL) - A senior economic advisor at the Prime Minister’s office has been appointed to head the newly created National Bureau of Statistics.

A statement from the Prime Minister’s office Thursday noted the Council of Ministers had settled for Sharmarke Farah as the Director-General of the Bureau which came into being following the passage of the Statistics Act in February.

The Cabinet also appointed Abdirahman Omar Dahir as the Deputy Director-General of the Bureau. NBS now replaces the Directorate of Statistics.

Farah has been the lead economic advisor of Prime Minister Hassan Khaire and the Coordinator of the Nation Economic Roadmap.

The Prime Minister’s office said the NBS boss brings in a wealth of experience having served as an economic researcher and social sector development including lead technical expert roles with the UN, World Bank, DfID, USAID, and private sector.

“Sharmarke worked with UNICEF for over seven years in various capacities in Somalia, New York HQ, and North Korea.

He has MSc on Public Policy and Management from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, UK,” the statement read in part.

The new NBS will be governed by a Board of Directors and a Director-General, which will act as the highest policy-making body of the NBS; and will formulate policies and set its internal regulations, priorities, standards, and criteria for all censuses and surveys to be carried out in Somalia.
