Djibouti reports 229 new COVID-19 cases as tally surges to 2,697

Djibouti's Ministry of Health on Wednesday announced 229 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Horn of Africa nation to 2,697 as of Wednesday afternoon.

The Djibouti Ministry of Health in a statement issued on Wednesday said that from a total of 989 people who were tested for COVID-19, some 229 of them were tested positive for the virus.

The ministry also announced that some 1,185 people who have been infected with the COVID-19 have recovered as of Wednesday afternoon, of which 53 of the COVID-19 recoveries were reported during the last 24 hours period.

The Horn of Africa nation also on Wednesday reported four new deaths due to illnesses related to COVID-19, eventually bringing the total number of deaths from the virus to 18, according to the ministry.

Djibouti reported its first COVID-19 case on March 18 and has so far conducted a total of 24,129 COVID-19 tests, according to the ministry.

The Red Sea nation, which lies on a key location connecting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, hosts a number of foreign military bases.
