COVID-19 cases in Somalia rise to 1,711 as 22 more test positive today

MOGADISHU (HOL) - Somalia Tuesday recorded 22 more COVID-19 cases bringing to 1,711 the number of confirmed cases since the global pandemic hit the Horn of Africa nation in mid-March.

The Ministry of Health announced Tuesday evening the new infections with most of the cases recorded in the break-away region of Somaliland.

Out of the 22 cases, Somaliland had 14 cases followed by Banaadir region with five and one each in HirShabelle, Jubbaland and South West states.

So far, 67 people have died while 253 have recovered leaving 1,391 active cases in various hospitals and homes countrywide.

Out of the 1,711 cases, Banaadir region which encompasses the capital Mogadishu is the most affected with 1,123 cases followed by Somaliland with 217 and Puntland recording 161 cases.

Jubbaland has recorded 99 cases while 88 other cases have been recorded in Southwest state.

Galmudug and HirShabelle states are the least affected in the terms of infections with 14 and nine cases respectively.

According to the Ministry of Health, 71% of the cases affect males while females account for 29%.
