Set aside differences for National good, Senate tells Farmaajo, regional leaders

Wednesday June 10, 2020

MOGADISHU (HOL) -The Senate has called on the country’s leadership to set aside political differences and come together to address pressing issues in the country.

Noting that it was time to ‘spare Somali people political squabbling’ the 54 member chamber said a crisis meeting bringing together the Federal Government, Federal Member States and other stakeholders should be held before the end of June.

The Standing Committee of the Senate  resolved the meeting take place on June 25 with the view to finding the road map for the upcoming elections.

The call by the Senate for the two levels of government to come together echoes a similar call by the US Tuesday which said ‘urgent cooperation’ was necessary.

Former Presidents Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Sheikh Sharif Ahmed have in the last two weeks met the Lower House speaker Mohamed Mursal two times over the elections issue.

There’s yet no official communication from the House on the talks.

In the statement issued by the Senate Tuesday,  it is noted Hashi will chair a committee to spearhead negotiations for the FGS and FMS leaders to meet.

The Senate also called on Somalis across the board to engage and support it in bringing the country’s leadership together.
