MOGADISHU (HOL) - Police in Mogadishu Monday said a number of its officers had been arrested in connection with bribery claims following complaints from members of the public in rare case of anti-corruption efforts within the police force.

Addressing the media in Mogadishu, police spokesman Captain Sadik Ali Adan said the officers, whom he did not specify the number were arrested following complaints from members of the public and motorists in the city.

“We applaud the members of the public for forwarding information without which it would not have been possible to make the arrests,” said Adan.

The police spokesman who recently took office said the officers were now in custody and awaiting to be arraigned in court.

Motorists in Mogadishu have over time complained of extortion from security officials who man the various checkpoints in the city.

The arrest of the officers follows the recent adoption of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS by the cabinet.

The strategy is aimed at fighting corruption, strengthening the integrity of institutions and ensuring the transparency of public finance management.
