JIGJIGA (HOL) - Legendary Somali musician Daud Ali Mashaf, famed for his mastery of the kaban (oud), and a lead singer in the famous Waaberi Band in the 1980s has passed on.
HOL has learnt that Mashaf died in Jigjiga in the Somali state of Ethiopia Friday but there was no immediate information on the circumstances regarding his death.
It was his adventure into the entertainment world that Musbaah adopted a new name-Mashaf, which would become a household name in Somali music halls of fame for years to come.
Besides his performances with Waaberi Band, Mashaf also produced his own songs which became hits in Somalia and across borders.
Like many artists of his ilk, Mashaf fled Somalia following the collapse of the central government in 1991 and moved to Djibouti where he spent most of his life.
