Uhuru urged to withdraw KDF troops from Somalia after Lamu attack

Monday January 6, 2020

Activist Boniface Mwangi has asked President Uhuru Kenyatta-led government to withdraw the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) from Somalia to protect the nation from incessant attacks by Al Shabaab terror militia.

In a tweet on Monday, Mwangi said that the recent attack in Lamu has exposed Kenya’s disaster unpreparedness. He noted that the withdrawal of the forces from Somalia will make the country better placed in the fight to protect the borders from any form of invasion at the end of the day.

“Kenya can't enjoy peace because our borders are porous. The needless presence of our soldiers in Somalia lends credence to the oft murmured view that this is purely a business venture by powerful people who are minting millions by putting our boys in harm's way,” he tweeted.

Three persons have been confirmed dead following the attack. The deceased include a US Serviceman and two civilian contractors. The American military confirmed the deaths through an official statement released to the media houses.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of our teammates who lost their lives today,” General Stephen Townsend, the head of US Africa Command (Africom), said after the attack.

President Kenyatta has been hesitant on the withdrawal of troops from Somalia amid attacks from the terror militia.
