NAIROBI (HOL) - The U.S military said Sunday afternoon it is monitoring the situation in Kenya’s Lamu region following an attack by the militant group Al-Shabaab on a military base which hosts Kenyan and US. Troops.

The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed in a tweet the incident and noted it is closely monitoring.

“U.S. Africa Command acknowledges there was an attack at Manda Bay Airfield, Kenya and is
monitoring the situation. Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the incident. As facts and details emerge, we will provide an update,” AFRICOM said in a tweet.

Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack but noted it was not linked to the killing of Iranian army general by US forces Friday. The group also released photos purportedly showing its fighters at the Manda Bay Airstrip.

The Kenyan military sad it had repulsed the attack and killed four Al-Shabaab militants.

Meanwhile aviation authorities in Nairobi have suspended flights to Lamu following closure of
the airstrip there.

"We have suspended civilian aircrafts to that airstrip indefinitely. We are accessing disruption and would advise over its opening later," Kenya Civil Aviation Authority director general Captain Gilbert Kibe told the local media.
