Puntland Presidential Guard en route to Mogadishu ahead of electoral meetings

Sunday August 30, 2020

Mogadishu (HOL) - Members of Puntland's Presidential Guard arrived in Mogadishu on Sunday ahead of Puntland President Said Deni's scheduled meeting with the Federal Government on Monday to discuss the electoral crisis.

Deni will be joined by Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe as the pair, facing mounting international pressure, look to end the political stalemate that has thrown the 2020-2021 election into jeopardy.

Both Deni and Madobe recently announced that they would not cosign the electoral agreements made at a third Dhusamareb conference between the Federal government and the regional presidents of Hirshabelle, Galmudug and Southwest State.

The decision to boycott Dhusamareb 3 was met with harsh criticism from the UN and the US, with the latter saying it "can't help those absent" and accusing Madobe and Deni of acting as spoilers.

However, after a meeting in Garowe, the leaders of Puntland and Jubaland announced that they would attend a scheduled meeting with the federal government in the nation's capital.

There are reports that the meeting will be held in the fortified Halane complex, a sprawling compound that flanks Mogadishu's international airport that houses foreign embassies and international NGO's.
