Independent sources have put the death toll at 6 (six). Emergency medical services provider Aamin Ambulance had earlier said it ferried 28 injured people to various city hospitals.

Sources have however indicated at least 40 people were injured in the attack. A senior official in the ministry of information is alleged to have been killed.

Initial reports indicate the attack involved a Toyota Surf which also carried gunmen who disembarked and made way into the hotel while the explosives-laden vehicle rammed into the entrance of the hotel located in Mogadishu’s Liddo Beach.

Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack.
