A statement from the ministry of information noted the government had already instituted investigations into the horrific killing which sent shockwaves across  the city Wednesday.

Those behind the killing will be brought to book, the statement noted.

Earlier, National Security Advisor Abdisaid Ali said those involved in the killing of the peace activist must face the law in due course.

“The killing of Almaas will be thoroughly investigated and the perpetrators who are responsible and allowed it to happen, must be brought to justice. Our citizens deserve protection. Almaas’s killing must never be repeated in our society,” Ali said in a tweet.

Similar sentiments were echoed by opposition leaders among them former Presidents Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Sheikh Sharif Ahmed who condemned the killing and called for thorough investigations.

There was an outpouring of messages of grieve and condolences in the social media as many who knew the work of Almaas mourned and praised her for her resilience.

Almaas, together with her sister Ilwad Elman and their mother Fartuun have been heavily involved in peace campaigns through the Elman Foundation supporting former child soldiers and vulnerable women in Somalia.

The circumstances surrounding Almaas’ killing remained scanty. A bullet which hit her and has been widely circulated on social media is allegedly a high caliber one.
