Somalia's Minister of Constitutional Affairs dies in UAE

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somalia's Ministry of Constitutional Affairs , Abdurahman Hosh Jibril is passed away, the Somali government confirmed on Friday.

The Minister died at a hospital in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a few hours after he was admitted for check-up.

Sources say the minister died while undergoing kidney treatment.

The director of the ministry, Mohamed Abukar Zubeyr confirmed the news in a statement.

Abdurahman Hosh Jibril was born in Jowhar, Somalia, a town 90km from Mogadishu where he lived throughout his childhood.

Hosh moved to  Canada and earned his BA from the University of Toronto in Sociology. He later went to study law at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University in Toronto.

For several years he worked as a lawyer practiting in immigration law and working with refugees. As an activist, he also took on many human rights and labour cases.

In 2011 was appointed as the Minister of Consititution and Reconciliation in the Tranistional Federal Government under President Sheikh Sharif's tenure. He was asked to complete the draft constitution. The consitution was approved by Somalia's parliament in August 2012. That same year he was elected to Somalia's House of Parliament and served an an MP until 2016.

In February 2017 he was appointed as the Federal Minister of Constitution. He said he faced many challenges as he took office, citing the lack of essential mechanisms, and untrained staff as a major hurdle.
