The National Assembly majority leader Aden Duale

The National Assembly majority leader Aden Duale now wants Education CS Prof. George Magoha to form a task force to investigate mass failure in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (KCSE) by students from North Eastern region.

Speaking in NEP girls secondary during school’s parent Saturday, Duale said Prof Magoha should come with answers why for the last 7 years’ children in secondary schools have been on tail end in the national examinations.

Duale who is the Garissa Township MP said if the education CS will not form such a task force he will petition parliament to constitute a select committee to probe the matter.

“We must know why there is mass failure in the national examinations in this region. This place is not exclusive area for students to score D or D+. We cannot accept,” Duale said and at the same time urged parents to do follow up on their children’s education progress in schools.

The three counties of Garissa, Wajir and Mandera have been performing dismally in the national examinations for sometimes now.

Although some stakeholders have attributed the poor performance on mass exodus of teachers as a results of insecurity, there are those who feel that this factor alone cannot be contributing to the poor performance.

Non-local teachers especially those teachings near the border have been targeted by Somalia based Al-Shabaab militants.

Duale said local leaders are concerned of the mass failure despite huge resources being pumped to schools in terms of infrastructure and bursaries for students.

The leader of majority also took issue with huge number of exam cancellations in the region noting: “As members of parliament from the region we will petition parliament to investigate these kind of cases.”
