The party said Sunday it had sued the government following the decision to bar its leader Sharif Sheikh Ahmed last month from boarding a plane to Kismayu.

Senator Ilyas Ali told journalists in Mogadishu the party had decided to seek legal redress noting the government violated rights of the party leader and other MPs from travelling freely within the country.

Officials of the party were unlawfully barred from boarding a flight to Kismayu, Senator Ali said.

“As a result, and in line with the need to preserve the dignity of Somali nation, protect rule of law and dignity of the leaders of this country, Himilo party has decided to file the suit,” said Ali.

Ali noted the order to bar president Sharif Ahmed was a violation of his rights as enshrined in articles 21, 33, 10 and 70. The laws relate to freedom of movement, parliamentary immunity, and human dignity.

Under the Somalia Provisional Constitution, Ahmed as a former head of state in a live member of the Lower House of the Federal Parliament.

Ahmed was blocked on September 22 in Mogadishu from travelling to Kismayu to attend the inauguration of Jubbaland president Ahmed Madobe.
