Federal and regional gov'ts have no power to decide elections: Somali polling agency

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali National Independent Electoral Commission has reiterated its responsibility to hold elections in Somalia.

Addressing the Senate House on Sunday, the chairperson of the commission, Halima Ismail Ibrahim said the leaders of the federal government and its member states have not to power to reach a decision on the poll.

She noted that it is only the commission that power to decide the modality of the poll.

"Whether its the government, the Federal Parliament or the federal member states has no business with the elections and has no law to declare to date of the elections and the modality of the elections," she said. "It is only the commission that has the authority to announce when the elections will take place."

Ibrahim stated the body is committed to delivering the service to the country.

She emphasized that the need to hold general elections saying the public need to get the right to elect their representatives.

She urged the House to work on ways to fulfill the target which could the public choose their representatives.

Despite elections being scheduled for 2020, the structure of the polls has not yet been formalized.
