WATCH: Protesters, counter-protesters turn out for US Rep. Illhan Omar Iftar appearance

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Several protesters and counterprotesters turned up at Emgage Texas's fourth annual Austin City Wide Iftar, which is featuring Somali-born Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.

Omar sparked controversy earlier this year (only weeks after becoming one of the first Muslim women sworn into Congress) when she made comments that touched on the Jewish influence in Washington, which many interpreted as anti-Semitic.

Austin Mayor Steve Adler — who is Jewish — will be the event's guest of honor, despite a call from Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller for him to decline the invitation.

Adler responded by saying:

    "It's a time for the community to get together and get closer to God. As the mayor of this city, it is my honor, privilege, responsibility and duty to lean into these kinds of learning opportunities rather than walking away from them."
