Somali Minister for Planning elected MP of Somali Parliament

GAROWE (HOL) - Jamal Mohamed Hassan has been elected as a member of Lower House following a by-election held on in Garowe, the administrative capital of Puntland state.

Somali National Independent Electoral Commission has held the election of the Parliamentary seat vacated by Dahar Ali Farah, who resigned from the post after he was appointed for Somalia’s consul in Djibouti.

Mr. Hassan, who is the current Minister of Planning of Somalia's Federal Government has garnered 49 out of the 51 votes to win the seat as his opponent Mohamud Abdullahi Mohamed got no votes. Two votes were invalid and spoilted.

National Independent Electoral Commission chairperson Halima Ismail (Haliimo Yarey) said the voting was free and fair.

“The voting was free and fair. The environment was satisfactory and the voters had an ample time to vote,” said Yarey.

The Process was observed by officials from Puntland state and Federal Government representatives.

Mr. Hassan served as the country's ambassador to Kenya before he was appointed as the Minister for Planning by Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire.
