Argentina legend Diego Maradona was so overcome by his nation's last-gasp win over Nigeria at the World Cup on Wednesday that he needed to be treated by paramedics at the ground.
Argentina looked set for an early exit before Marcos Rojo’s 86th-minute goal sent their fans into raptures, Maradona, who was seated in the stands, among them. The former Napoli striker, a World Cup winner himself, celebrated Rojo's goal and Argentina's place in the round of 16 with a questionable double-bird salute.
But that wasn't the end of the drama. After the final whistle, a stumbling Maradona needed to be helped inside the VIP box to receive medical treatment. The soccer great was unsteady on his feet and had to be helped by several people as his condition got the best of him. One video showed paramedics at the arena testing his heart rate.
ESPN’s Diego Cora reported Maradona was then taken to hospital for precautionary tests. But UK media reported that Maradona's condition had stabilised. The 1986 World Cup champion has a history of health issues including heart problems and cocaine addiction.
