National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale at a past function. He wants Somali men to marry many wives.
National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has asked men from the Somali community to marry more than one wife in order to sire many children for political reasons.
Speaking at the Eastleigh High School during Somali annual festival dubbed Firi Cultural Expo Eastleigh, the Garissa lawmaker said that polygamous marriages will increase the population of the community, adding that they will have numbers needed to rise through political ranks.
He made it clear that the Islamic culture allows them to marry more than one wife.
“As Muslim, we have been given an opportunity to marry up to four wives so that we can produce as many children as possible. That will work for us politically in terms of voting, so that will keep us ahead of others,” said Duale.
The remarks come after Kiambu Woman Representative Gathoni Wamuchomba also pleaded with men from her region to marry many wives for the sake of their political future.
The opinion of the lawmaker has continued to attract a mixed reaction from different parts of the nation. In the past, the government has been encouraging family planning in a bid to control the rising poverty levels in the nation.
