The Ottawa police’s homicide squad is investigating after a man in his early 20s was found dead following an early morning shooting in Mechanicsville.
Police were called by several residents on the 100 block Carruthers Avenue, just south of Lyndale Avenue, around 3:40 a.m. after they reported hearing what sounded like bullets in the neighbourhood.
Neighbours heard upwards of half-a-dozen gunshots, and reported some yelling and a fleeing vehicle to police.
Patrol officers eventually located one man’s body in the back alleyway behind Carruthers. He had been shot multiple times in the chest and was without any vital signs.
Police said next-of-kin are being notified and the man’s identification was not released.
It is the city’s 16th homicide of 2018.
Carruthers between Lyndale and Scott Street remains closed.
