Al-Shabaab executes Somali-British Jihadist accused of spying for UK

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali militants Al-Shabaab have executed five men for allegedly engaging in espionage against the group.

Among those executed publicly was a 32-year-old Somali-British, Awale Ahmed Mohamed who has been fighting alongside the militant group since 2013.

The terrorist group accused the five of spying for Western countries and the Somali government.

Mr. Mohamed who once lived in London was killed by a firing squad in front of hundreds of residents in Jilib town, Southern Somalia after the group said he was convicted of aiding UK's Mi6 against Al-Shabaab.

"Awale Ahmed Mohamed, (32) was accused of being a mole spying for UK spy agency known Mi6,. He confessed that he was working for UK Intelligence agency," Al-Shabaab jury said, "Thus the court sentenced him to death."

The other victims are Jaylani Abdullahi Nut  (36), Mohamed Abdullahi Awful  (35), Abdiaziz Abdisalam Sheikh (22) and  Abdikadir Isack Amin.

The terrorist group previously executed foreign jihadists including Kenyans, Tanzanians and others from Europe over alleged espionage.

Al-Shabaab has been struggling to overthrow Somali government since 2007.

The group lost many towns including the capital city to Somali forces backed by continental troops.
