UK security minister warns Al Qaeda upping tech to down passenger planes: report

Ben Wallace, Britain's security minister, told The Sunday Times that future attacks planned by the terror group responsible for the events of September 11, 2001 are keeping UK officials "awake at night."Wallace reportedly claimed, based on national intelligence, that Al-Qaeda is developing technology capable of downing passenger airliners.

Officials at Whitehall told the Times that the terror group is developing miniature explosive devices and that some of its factions have previously plotted using explosive UAVs (drones) to target civilians.

Al-Qaeda and its affiliated groups currently retain strongholds in Yemen, Somalia, and Syria.

The group has carried out attacks throughout the Middle East, including massacres and bombings of entire communities of both Muslims and non-Muslims in Yemen, Syria, and Iraq.

In Europe, Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the shooting attack on the Charlie Hebdo satirical newspaper offices in Paris in 2015.
