A gang of about seven walked into Takbir petrol station and ordered two watchmen to lie down, Mandera East divisional police commander Eziekiel Singo’e narrated.

TIED UP

The police boss said the guard were tied up by the attackers who then broke the safe and took that amount of money.

Mr Singo’e said the attackers were dressed in police uniform.

“We are informed that the robbers were in police uniforms," he said, adding the watchman was killed for raising the alarm.
“He was hit on the back of the head with a blunt object," he said.

Mr Sing'oe identified the killed man as Dakane Abdille Abdi and his colleague as Salat Osman Jelle.

LOCALS

The robbers had to break at least three metallic doors before reaching the safe.

A witness who did not want to be named said the attackers seemed familiar with the operations at the station.

“They are locals, not people from the neighbouring Bulahawa town of Somalia, as they knew the location of the safe,” he said.

The witness noted that the incident took place in an area that is heavily guarded at night, due to threat posed by Al-Shabaab terrorists.

Mr Sing'oe denied the claims that police may have been involved and promised a conclusive probe.
