TORONTO (HOL) - Hassan emerged the uncontested nominee on Wednesday night at the party's nomination meeting held at the Weston Collegiate Institute.
NPD nominators and seconders from the York-South Weston riding included Katherine Slate, Odoardo Di Santo, Yafet Tewelde, Fadumo Jama ( Mama Nakrumah) Janet Jones, Riley Peterson, Zeyd Hassan, Hussein Cadaani and Chiara Padovani.
"I am running because I want to stand up for everyone who calls York-South Weston home and who feels that they have been let down by the current Liberal government”, Faisal told Hiiran.com after the meeting.
"It’s a Liberal Government that is out of touch and that needs to be replaced by a strong, inspired NDP government led by Andrea Howarth," he said.
Faisal is well known in the Somali community of Toronto for his social and community work. In the past, he helped many new comers to Canada with housing and other social support. In the past, he worked as a staff at the York-South Weston MP’s office for Mike Sullivan where he directly helped people with their needs.
Said Sheikh Abdi, a resident of York-South Weston and the Chairman of Toronto’s largest Masjid who attended the meeting told Hiiraan.com that he has 7 voters in his household alone and he will make sure that they all come out on June 7, 2018 to vote for Faisal. He said, “ Faisal Hassan is a fighter and he has a track record of helping the community. We are very happy with his nomination,” he said.
Now that Faisal is the NDP candidate for York-South Weston, he will be running against Liberal Candidate Laura Albanese who celebrates her 10th year at the Ontario legislature in 2007 as MPP for York South—Weston.
Faisal said that his work starts tonight and residents of York-South Weston should count on him to create a better future for York-South Weston.
"We have an incredible mix of experience and new energy and we will outwork the others. You can bet on that," he said.
Faisal ran for the Federal Etobicoke North MP’s office in 2015 against incumbent Kirsty Duncan who won her third consecutive term as Liberal MP
Ontario's next election will happen in June 2018.
