Blast injures 11 in Somali capital

Mogadishu (HOL) - Eleven people are believed to be injured after a car bomb owned by a civil servant was detonated in Mogadishu.

Witnesses say that a government official's car was parked close to the Banadir Junction and Erdogan hospital when it exploded injuring passerbys.

“An IED fitted to a saloon car exploded near shopping centre, injuring at least eleven including pedestrians who happened to be near the shopping centre during the explosion,” said eyewitness who spoke to Hiiraan Online.

Omar Farah, a police officer at the scene of the explosion said the blast damaged nearby cars and shops.

“It was a heavy explosion which destroyed the car together with nearby shops but we are yet confirmed whether there were occupants in the car during the past,” Fatah noted.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility but the explosion comes barely five days after four Alshabaab militants stormed Nasa-Hablood two Hotel following a suicide car bomb detonated VBIED at the entrance gate, leading the death tall of 23 people.

Al-Shabaab has stepped up their deadly attacks on densely populated areas in the capital since early last month. Three weeks ago, over 350 people were killed and over 600 other injured in a massive truck bomb explosion on Zone junction, the blast became worst ever attack the city.
