Nairobi (HOL) - Armed gunmen stormed into a school in Dadaab on Thursday morning and kidnapped two teachers, according to locals and officials.

Residents tell HOL that heavily armed men stormed into Al-Huda School in Hagadera - one of five refugee camps that make up the Dadaab complex - just after 1 am. There are varying reports on the number of attackers and police remain tight-lipped as investigations are ongoing.

Mohamed Saleh, the North Eastern Regional Coordinator has confirmed the abductions of the two teachers who he said were "non-local". He added that security forces are on the scene and working on rescuing the educators.

The police suspect that the kidnappers may have tried to flee over the Somali border and are focusing their resources on sealing off potential exit points.

There is no immediate claim of responsibility which makes the intention of the kidnappers nearly impossible to assess.

In October 2015, A teacher was kidnapped at Hagadera refugee camp in Dadaab, Garissa County, by people suspected to be members of the Somali-based militant group Al-Shabaab.
