Aust gives $20m to South Sudan famine

Australia will give an extra $20 million aid to famine-hit parts of South Sudan and Somalia which is also on the brink of a major food crisis.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says the assistance will provide emergency food and nutrition, health services, water and sanitation and agricultural help to vulnerable communities, particularly women and children.

Aid groups warn of a race against time to stop the spread of famine in South Sudan before the rainy season hits.

There are fears 5.5 million people will go hungry by July.

Authorities have officially declared more than 100,000 people in two counties of South Sudan's Unity state are experiencing famine while an additional one million are on the brink of starvation.

The South Sudan famine is the result of a prolonged civil war.

The United Nations says Somalia is on the brink of famine.
