Galkayo (HOL) - Galmudug Regional President Abdikarim Hussein Guled has stepped down from office on Saturday citing health concerns.
The surprise announcement through a press release released to the media on Sunday. Guled has been President of the semiautonomous region since July 2015 said that upon advice from his doctors, he can no longer fulfill the duties of the President.
"Today, February 26, I hereby declare that I decided to leave office, because my current health condition will not allow me to perform my duties as President of Galmudug effectively,"
The former Regional President has recently underwent heart treatment in India.
He is closely linked to the former Hassan Sheikh Mohamud administration serving as the Minister of Interior and Minister of National Security of Somalia.
Galmudug and it’s neighbour Puntland have clashed violently in recent months leading to hundreds of casualties and displacing thousands of civilians.
The embattled President was impeached by state lawmakers last month but he declared the vote unconstitutional.
