With less than three days to the August 8th General Election, political leaders led by President Uhuru Kenyatta have urged Kenyans to maintain peace.
President Kenyatta during a rally held in Nairobi’s Uhuru Park on Friday urged the residents of Nairobi to stay put and vote noting that their security will be taken care of.
Also joining in the chorus of singing for peace are ordinary Kenyans who have urged their fellow countrymen to observe peace before, during and after the elections.
Speaking to Capital News, Shadrack Kirimi who is a driver of Unik Shuttle on the Maua-Nairobi route urged his fellow countrymen to recognise the role peace plays in the country.
Someone who wanted to remain anonymous in this report simply urged Kenyans to go and vote and not fight their neighbours when the results don’t go their way.
“I’m a Kenyan and I love Kenya. I want to urge us all that when the Election Day comes, let us choose our leaders in peace,” she said.
Martin Munene, a 23-year-old passenger who had taken leave to go and vote in Imenti North, Meru county lamented the increased fares but urged Kenyans to maintain peace.
“What I can tell Kenyans who are going to vote is that we vote in peace. Just like we have been informed, there is enough security so there is no need to cause chaos,” he said.
The National Police Service (NPS) through an advert in a local daily on Friday committed to providing non-partisanship, fidelity to the law, responsiveness and multi agency endeavour during the election period.
Signed by Joseph Boinnet, Inspector General, NPS, the statement outlined the measures that the body has taken to offer a supportive role to the IEBC in ensuring that citizens civic duties peacefully.
“During this electioneering period, the NPS is assuring Kenyans of our commitment to provide a safe, secure, and peaceful environment on the 8th, August 2017 General elections,” the statement read in part.
“To this end, we have put in place adequate security measures and deployed police officers both as requested by IEBC and our own security assessment across the country,” continued the statement.
Kenyans will be lining up to vote in the on August 8th in an election which has been called “neck and neck” by pollsters.
