Sisters find new home in Utah after becoming refugees without family

Saturday April 8, 2017

NPR recently featured two sisters, Fatuma Abdullahi and Maryan Osman, refugees from Somalia, who have found a better life in Salt Lake City.

The sisters’ parents died during a civil war in Somalia, making both of the girls refugees within the country. But a young Utah couple, Annie and Randall Johnson, brought them to Salt Lake City.

"Not a lot of people become a mom at 28 to teenage daughters," Annie Johnson told NPR. "So, the learning curve has been steep."

And last summer, their new parents gave birth to a little boy named Roscoe.

Fatuma and Maryan told NPR that it was hard to adjust to American culture at first, since U.S. culture is “noticeably different from their home in Africa,” according to NPR.

"Here the neighbors, (are) so quiet, you feel like you're living by yourself," Maryan told NPR. "Even in the jungle animals made sounds, but here the sounds you hear is only the cars."

Maryan also praised her parents for always wanting to talk and hug her when she’s going through tough times.

"The best thing I love about you guys is no matter what I do, you still forgive me and give me chance to move on," she told NPR.
