MOGADISHU (HOL) - At least two police officers are confirmed dead and scores injured after a heavy explosion rocked Mogadishu, officials and witnesses said on Sunday morning.
The incident occurred near the textile shopping complex in Mogadishu's Hamarweyne suburb. Sources say, the explosion resulted from the detonation of a remote controlled land mine.
Sources told HOL that the target was Banadir Regional Police Department in the area as more police were deployed in the scene and are carrying out investigation on the explosion.
No one has claimed responsibility of the attack, but Al-Shabaab conducted similar attacks in many parts of the country.
This explosion comes at a time that elections for the lower house are taking place in many parts of the country.
Islamist militant group al-Shabaab has threatened to disrupt the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections expected to be held at the end of this month.
" The scheduled election will serve foreign interests and we are determined to disrupt it" said spokesman of the group, Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rageh
