FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a man who pleaded guilty to a federal hate crime for firebombing a Somali restaurant in Grand Forks should not be released before his sentencing hearing.

Matthew Gust, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, is accused of targeting the Juba Coffee House because of the nationality of the employees and customers. Gust has denied that the December incident revolved around race, but pleaded guilty to a pair of charges.

Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 29. In the meantime, Gust is asking to be released either to his parents or a residential treatment center in order to will help him with his sobriety and allow him to work.

Prosecutors say Gust is a flight risk and danger to the community and should not be released.
