US, Somali forces raid rebel-held town in southern Somalia
Tuesday, May 17, 2016
MOGADISHU (HOL) – Somali troops backed by US advisors raided a Somali town held by the Al-Qaeda linked Al Shabab group in southern Somalia on Sunday, the latest in series of attacks by allied forces in recent months, officials said on Monday.
Somali intelligence agency tweeted that troops using helicopters attacked Barire, a town in Lower Shabelle region.
It gave no more details about the raid; however troops launched previous attacks on several militants-held towns in recent weeks.
There was no immediate comment from Al Shabab group.
The militant group which claimed the responsibility for several deadly attacks in Somalia and neighbouring countries including Kenya and Uganda is under military pressure by African Union and Somali forces that ousted its fighters from key strongholds including the port city of Kismayo.
US government which deployed military advisors helping AU and Somali forces in the horn of Africa nation hasn’t yet commented on the latest attack.
