Somali Islamist militants briefly held a port town in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland before withdrawing early Tuesday, a local government minister said.
Al-Shabaab fighters arrived by boat and took control of Gara’ad late Monday, Security Minister Abdi Herfi told reporters in Puntland’s regional capital, Garowe. Government forces are now in control of the settlement, he said.
Puntland has avoided most of the violence carried out by al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-linked group that’s waged an insurgency in Somalia since 2006.
