DJIBOUTI (HOL) – Migration remains a top agenda for the African Parliamentary Union’s conference which started in Djibouti’s capital. Monday with participants are expected to discuss about the links between migration and development

Representatives from 40 African parliaments at the conference would also narrow ideas about migration and human mobility in four of its 17 goals in line with the conference’s main theme: Contribution of African migrants to the development of countries of origin and destination.

Last year, European leaders have offered African countries almost €2bn (£1.4bn) in return for agreeing to the deportation of unwanted migrants from Europe, in an attempt to tackle the migration crisis.

During the two day conference, the conference’s participants would have to propose targeted solutions when dealing with the migration issue.

In view of the contributions that African diaspora make to their certain countries, the conference would also discuss the links between migration and development, the factors of migration and the often unknown or underestimated contribution of migrants in their countries of origin and destination.

“We shall also discuss the measures to be taken to maximize this contribution. A case study will illustrate all the measures taken to support the contribution of migrants.”  the African Parliamentary Union said in a statement issued Monday.

Thousands of Africa immigrants, mostly from poor African countries embark on the dangerous journey for Europe, in hopes of a better life.

Their dangerous journeys have fueled human trafficking market which has become more lucrative in recent years. Libya remains a major departure point for irregular migrants setting off for Europe.
