Somalia ready to receive refugees

The government is working on a programme in which over 500,000 refugees at the five camps in Daadab, Garissa County will be voluntarily repatriated.

The programme, which is in collaboration with the United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR), will begin the process whose long-term plan is to stabilize the war-torn country.

Speaking Monday morning in Daadab when he toured the camps, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery said the necessary infrastructure such as health, education and water among other basic necessities have been put in place before the refugees go back to their homes.
He noted that so far over 45,000 refugees have voluntarily gone back to their homes over the last two years.

Nkaissery also met with leaders from the five refugee camps to hear their concerns about the programme that was rolled out in 2013 but is yet to implemented.

Speaking at the same function, National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale said that Kenya believes in the rule of law and respects all UN charters, adding that this was the main why it has troops inside Somalia to ensure that refugees return to a safe country.

He urged UNHCR and other agencies to ensure the bad elements within the refugee camps are dealt with so that Kenyans can feel safe in their own country.

The Interior CS was accompanied by elected leaders among them Garissa Governor Nathif Jamah, Dadaab MP Dr Mohammed Dahiye, Garissa Women Rep Shukran Gure and North Eastern Regional Coordinator Ambassador Mohamud Saleh.
