HARGEISA (HOL) ---Two soldiers were killed and two others were wounded after unidentified gunmen have attacked the house of a governor in the breakaway Somaliland region on Tuesday evening, officials said.
The attackers fought the guards at Awdal region’s governor Mohamud Saleban before the attack was repulsed after more than 20 minutes of battle.
Such attacks are uncommon in Somaliland which has enjoyed a relative stability during Somalia’s two-decades old conflict.
The governor who was at home at the time of the attack has escaped unharmed, according to police.
The Somaliland government hasn’t so far commented on the incident, however, security forces have arrested several traditional elders after the attack.
The assailants have reportedly escaped into the nearby Ethiopia border after the attack.
The attack comes few weeks after Somaliland the Ethiopia’s ethnic Somali regional government have signed a pact that would see the two sides working together on the neighbouring regions’ security.
Somaliland which has declared a unilateral independence from the rest of Somaliland has its own security, economic and government system.
