Four women accused of being Al-Shabaab members have been denied bond by a Mombasa court.

Ms Ummulkheir Sadri Abdalla, Ms Khadija Abubakar Abdulkadir, Ms Maryam Said Aboud and Ms Halima Adan Ali will remain in custody pending the hearing of their case, the court ruled yesterday.

The magistrate declined to release the accused on bond “at this stage” but said they can renew their application before the trial court.

While the magistrate concurred with the defence that the accused are entitled to bond, he also agreed with the prosecution on the limitation of some rights.

After the ruling, defence lawyer Chacha Mwita applied to have certified copies of the proceedings.

The accused allegedly engaged in criminal activity by being members of the terrorist group.

Ms Abdalla, Ms Abdulkadir and Ms Aboud are alleged to have committed the offence on March 27 at Elwak in Mandera county. Ms Ali allegedly committed the offence on April 3 at Kyumvi in Machakos County.

The case will be mentioned on June 12 to fix a hearing date.
