Kenya's top police chiefs tour insecurity-hit northern region

MANDERA, Kenya -- Kenyan top security officers visited the insecure Madera County bordering Somalia where Al-Shabaab killed at least three people and injured eight others.

The visit by officers led by Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett came a day following attack in which the Somali militants claimed responsibility after ambushing a convoy of Governor of Mandera County Ali Roba on Friday morning.

Boinett said the governor who was travelling from Mandera to Wagadud in a convoy of six vehicles and escorted by the police, was attacked between Fino and Damasa area.

According to the security officials, the injuries occurred as results of the impact of hand grenade lobbied at the victims' vehicles.

Boinett said the attackers, who were about 30 in number, sprayed the two rear vehicles in the convoy with bullets, and they burned one of the vehicles. "I urge Kenyans to be vigilant and support the work of our officers, as well as other security agencies, to keep our country safe from such criminals. The National Police Service will keep the country updated about the incident," he said.

Boinett said all security measures have been put in place to ensure that any criminal activities are dealt with.

Since Kenya sent troops across the border into Somalia in October 2011, northern and parts of eastern Kenya have been hit by a series of blasts, many targeting local security forces and humanitarian workers.
