A Somali youth group wants more than $4 million in state funding to help fight international terrorist recruitment across Minnesota.
The cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are already part of a Department of Justice pilot program to stop extremists from recruiting people to join overseas terrorist organizations like al-Shabab and the Islamic State group. Specifics of that program have yet to be announced.
Mohamed Farah is executive director of the Somali youth group Ka Joog. He told a state Senate committee on education Thursday that his group wants $4.35 million in state funding over the next two years.
Farah says the money would pay for workforce training, arts initiatives and after-school programs for Somali youth across the state.
