The African Union (AU) will meet in January in a bid to find solution to the ongoing crisis in Burundi.Chairman of the Parliamentary Defense and Foreign Relations Committee, Ndung’u Gethenji, said the AU through its Peace and Security Council will be pursuing dialogue between conflicting parties in the country to ensure peace is restored.
“The AU will be pursuing dialogue to ensure normalcy is restored and that the political choices of the people of Burundi are respected,” said Gethenji, who is also the Tetu Member of Parliament.
Gethenji reported that the AU has already deployed a troop of 5,000 strong peace keeping force in Burundi ahead of the January meeting to ensure peace and security of the citizens is assured.
However, Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza is opposed to the peace keeping mission insisting his government can tame the crisis that has so far left over 400 people dead.
Gethenji said the union was committed to ensuring peace prevails in all its member states through homegrown mechanisms.
“The AU is formed on the premise of finding solutions to African problems through own initiatives, dialogue and brotherhood without waiting for solutions from outside world,” Gethenji said.
He exuded confidence that a lasting solution will be found over Burundi crisis to ensure peace prevails to enable its people participate in development in their country and East Africa.
