Garissa, Kenya: Religious leaders in Garissa have strongly condemned the Thursday morning attack that claimed 147 livess and left scores injured at the Garissa University College.

At the same time, the leaders disowned the attackers as Muslims saying terrorists are using religion to commit heinous act of killing innocent students indiscriminately.

"We the Muslim Community of Garissa County condemn the heinous acts committed against innocents of Garissa University College; we sincerely send our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those killed," said Abdullahi Salat, the Supkem Chairman Garissa branch while flanked by other religious leaders at a press conference Friday morning.

Gunmen suspected to be members of Al-Shabaab militia early Thursday morning stormed Garissa University College shooting indiscriminately killing 147 according to government official report.

Salat says the Muslim community in the county will do all in their power to work together with the government to help protect citizens and address security challenges in the country. He calls upon all Kenyans young and old to stand firm, asserting that this war is an international war and can only be won when everyone takes part.

Majority of the students interviewed expressed their reluctance of ever going back to the institution and urged the government to deploy them to other safer university colleges.

Several shops remained closed with majority of residents opting to remain indoors.
