Uhuru Kenyatta summoned by ICC

President Uhuru Kenyatta has been summoned by the International Criminal Court (ICC) at The Hague to explain the whereabouts of documents prosecutors are requesting to prepare a case against him for alleged crimes against humanity.

In a statement seen by APA in Nairobi on Saturday, the ICC said Kenyatta has been invited before its tribunal on October 8 over his government’s alleged lack of cooperation with prosecutors in the run-up to his trial.

He is supposed to respond to allegations that his government had deliberately kept away from ICC investigators files required by the prosecutors to determine the case against him for alleged crimes against humanity during post-election violence in Kenya between late 2007 and early 2008.

At least 1,500 people had died and some 500,000 more displaced during weeks of inter ethnic clashes following the disputed outcome of the polls.

Kenyatta has denied ICC accusations that he was one of the masterminds behind the orgy of violence.

His trial has been postponed severally as the ICC accused his government of obstructing the course of justice in the case which has been adjourned indefinitely over lack of enough evidence.

President Kenyatta has been reluctant to go to The Hague for trial, saying as a sitting head of state he was required to remain in Kenya to deal with threats from the Somali militant group al-Shabaab and oversee other matters of state.

Vice President, William Ruto also faces crime against humanity charges by the ICC over the same incident.
