Uganda: Govt hails Somalia for peace-building

Minister of Information and National guidance Rosemary Namayanja has hailed Somalia’s Federal Government for efforts towards rebuilding their dilapidated nation.

Namayanja specifically praised the existing government addressing issues of women rights and children protection among others.

She said Somalia has experienced 22 years of in fighting and there is need to draft a policy to address gender and child protection.

Namayanja made the remarks during an awareness raising workshop on Gender Issues for Somali media practitioners at Speke Resort Munyonyo on Monday.

She advised the practitioners to promote gender issues in society. “Media is virtual tool in community mobilization national development and mainstreaming gender related issues, “Namayanja said.

She said the path so far taken by Somali government with support of Amison will bear fruits and Uganda is committed to support Somalia to ensure that there is peace and security in the Horn of Africa.

Somalia’s Deputy Minister of Information Abdullahi Olad Roble hailed Amison for bringing peace in Somali which has aided transfer of knowledge and expand our experience in journalism. He said the media has helped in reducing the problem of gender and child abuse by 80 %.

The journalist are going to participate in the formulation of the media policy to guide them  and 80 % are to participate so it will not be biased and this will be the 1st media law in Somalia.

African Union Acting Special Representative for Somalia Lydia Wanyoto Mutende said that Somali journalist are in Uganda to  get a leaf on how to cover the public and inform the public about the rights of women and children.

In the areas where there has been war there is a problem and have victims of war especially children and women so as to rebuild and construction to bring on board programs of women and children so that the media can appreciated importance of children and women to rebuild after the many years for war in the areas especially in the horn of Africa
