The town of Buulo-Barde in the central Somali region of Hiiraan has seen the first humanitarian assistance since Somali government seized the town more than two months ago, a government official in the region confirmed.

The aid comes as severe humanitarian crisis were recently reported in the town which has been under Al-Shabab siege since the militants were driven out of the city on 13th of March this year.

The town’s commissioner Ahmed Abdi Wehliye who was reached for comment by HOL on Wednesday afternoon said that two small planes carrying life-saving assistances have arrived today.

“For nearly two and a half months ago no food assistance or commercial good were imported into the town, as AL Shabab were preventing food rations from getting into the town and due to that reason thousands of vulnerable families faced very terrible living conditions” the district commissioner told HOL during an interview later on the day.

He said that the food assistance mainly porridge and biscuits were allocated for the children facing the worst malnutrition in recent years.

“This assistance is part of Somali government’s plans to send such aid to the previously Al shabab-controlled regions in the country” Mr. Ahmed Abdi Wehliye explained.
