Mogadishu, Somalia (HOL) -The United Nations Special Representative to Somalia Nicholas Kay has arrived in city of Jowhar on Saturday to get a first hand look at  the humanitarian crisis in the region.

During his hvisit to the region Mr. Kay held talks with the regional governor Abdi Jinow Alasow as well as the city’s mayor and other prominent officials.

Sources close to the meeting said that both sides discussed on how the United Nations aid agencies can devise a coordinated response to the humanitarian problems in the region; particularly the disasters caused by the recent floods which destroyed thousands of acres of farmland and washed away livestock.

The UN's top official in Somalia and his delegation were on a mission to gather information about the damages and the losses caused by the floods and how the UN could reach the needy people whose properties and livelihoods were swept away by the floods which hit more than 30 villages in the region.

This was Mr. Kay’s  first trip to the region since he was appointed as the UN Somalia envoy last year. He is expected to release a statement about his tour to the region later.
